Escaping Eggshells – Video Documentary

My name is Nicole Coffman. I’m 24, in my last year in Communications, media, and film at the University Of Windsor.  This documentary you are about to/ have just watched is, at the heart of it, about a few things. 1. Relationships 2. Abuse – the accepting and rejecting of it. And 3. Motives. How these 3 things intertwine with each other is an infinite circle.

I shared my story (which I’ve heard is the domestic abuse version of intervention). Domestic abuse has ties in many of the same things addiction does. The cycle of how you and your parents and your parents’ parents were raised.  Denial. The cycle from lows to highs and apologies and promises. Hurting the ones you love the most.

My father has had alcoholic and rage tendencies my whole life. My brother and I found bongs and pot as young as 7 in our house and eventually came to see it as normal. 

You do not have to be drunk or high every night to display the same issues and tendencies as heavy users.  The way I view the use of these things in my adult life is complicated, as friends and lovers who have not seen the side I have seen use in moderation. My father would self medicate himself for his own actions and stress but me and my family were left to suffer the consequences for doing nothing wrong or out of the ordinary.  His addictions kept him from seeing his damage and he lost his whole family eventually.

I hope putting my vulnerabilities on the line in a visual form will really make people think hard about their standards or treatment for themselves and for others.
