Serving Detox Holistic Style!
Acupuncture is an effective method in rehab for detoxing and reducing withdrawal symptoms in drug and alcohol addiction patients.
Acupuncture has been in use for thousands of years. In that time acupuncture has developed into many types and has many techniques. It has been practiced by several cultures around the globe, although the Chinese and surrounding Asian cultures have refined acupuncture to what we know it to be now.
Acupuncture has several different styles, one being Western Auricular Acupuncture: the style consistently known to be the most effective adjunct therapy for both trauma and chemical detoxification for the complementary modalities available today.
The acupuncture protocol involves inserting tiny, sterilized, disposable needles into a few points on each ear. The needles are retained up to 45 minutes to relieve withdrawal and stress symptoms. The theory behind that practice holds that the entire body can be affected by stimulating points on the ear. The focus is on harmonizing the flow of energy in the body so that all organs and processes come into balance. Acupuncture is effective in reducing mood changes, irritability, insomnia and fatigue.
It has been scientifically proven by several modern Western medical researchers that acupuncture stimulates the secretion of endorphins in the brain, this is vitality important as long-term usage of chemicals and alcohol can reduce the production of endorphins. In the recovery process, acupuncture can bring endorphin levels back up to natural levels. It also stimulates red blood cell production and boosts the immune system. With its analgesic and calming effects, acupuncture is very suitable for chemical and substance detoxification by softening the symptoms of addictive-drug withdrawal.
Acupuncture gives aid in treating patient detoxification by supporting the main organs of elimination in the body, thus speeding the toxins out of the bloodstream and out of the body. Even after the first treatment mental clarity, the ability to focus and a general sense of well-being can be attained.
Acupuncture also supports conventional western treatments such as the 12-step programs as it allows the client to be more relaxed and in a better headspace to be more receptive to counseling and less likely to ‘act out’ or ‘misbehave’. While there is no magic bullet in the addiction recovery process, acupuncture in combination with a counseling treatment program, can give an even more positive and successful experience.
With more than 1500 clinical sites in the US, Europe Australia; the use of acupuncture for mental traumatic injury and chemical and addiction withdrawal is on the rise as a safe complementary modality.
How to Prepare for an Acupuncture Detox Session?
Since acupuncture is about balancing the energy of the body, it is advised that clients follow a few recommendations for at least 1 hour before and after treatment:
- DO make sure to drink a good amount of water. Acupuncture works best if hydrated and extra water helps the detoxification process.
- DO NOT eat a large amount of food before the treatment, but please DO have eaten something within two hours before treatment.
- DO NOT smoke for at least 1 hour before and as long as possible (another hour if possible) afterwards. Smoking disrupts treatment as it accelerates the nervous system.
- DO NOT do any excessive exercise or physical activity for at least one hour before or after treatment, try to plan your activities accordingly so that you can allow your body to absorb the treatment.
- DO continue to take any prescribed medication from your regular physician. Medical acupuncture does not interfere with other forms of medical treatment, although the reverse is not always true. Please keep your acupuncturist informed of any changes, new medications or medical treatments.
- DO prepare to have energy moved around. Any emotional baggage and recent traumatic events may come up as energy pathways are being cleared and emotions can present themselves. This is normal and part of the recovery process to allow grieving
- DO remember to keep good mental or written notes of any changes after the treatment. Record any symptoms and changes, even if they do not seem to be related to your treatment. This is important as your acupuncturist will want to know about your response.
